Resolutions: Self-Portraits with Sonified Pixel Data (2008, in progress)
Photography installation with stereo audio (CD playback with headphones).
A series of self-portraits, where digital photographs are used as a musical score. Data is converted to sound in SuperCollider. Color data from each pixel are "spoken" by a recording of my voice; the end of each row is marked by a breath. A project to explore how our self-representations and lived realities are bounded by parameters of digital encoding, like bit depth and pixels per inch.
MP3 excerpt:
Self-Portrait #5 (excerpt) | 2:38 - 3.7 mb
In this excerpt, a recording of my voice "speaks" the pixel data along a line in my forehead in the photo at left. What sounds like an echo is actually caused by the extremely high number of pixels playing in rapid succession.
Photographs by Abe Doherty, Oakland CA, 2006.
