Places I've Lived & Traveled To, 1973-2005 (2005)

An audiovisual composition tracking my movement patterns throughout life, based on memories of living and travel. Places are arranged chronologically with relative durations, with a timescale of 30 seconds = 1 year. Latitude, longitude and elevation data describing each place are mapped to sound frequency. Audio output is input to video, and framed with an analog video mixer. Periods of stillness and turbulence in my life are evident in the audiovisual oscillations, as a waveform representation of the places I've been continually passes by the window-like frame.
Database and narrative are often inherently opposed forms, but this work attempts to bring them together by embedding a narrative of life patterns into a database structure. This piece reveals how personal memory and audiovisual signals are both "lossy" mediums with dropouts and imperfections. It also suggests a way of experiencing waveforms as landscape.
