Butterfly Ecosystem (2005)
An instructional score for an ensemble of improvising musicians, performed by the Mills College Contemporary Performance Ensemble (led by Fred Frith and Steed Cowart).
Like the computer music composition "Butterfly Effects," these instructions are based on environmental conditions and behavioral aspects of migrating butterflies. The score encodes environmental conditions of temperature, wind, and rain - which are offset by behavioral responses of clustering, flying away, energy consumption, and predation. Interpersonal aspects of group improvisation become a metaphor for larger issues of resilience and survival.
